Description Glyn 2021-02-05 18:11:20 UTC
SUMMARY
When playing back previous projects, Kdenlive will quit when playing clips which have either a fade in or fade out effect. I have confirmed this by disabling all fade in and fade out effects, then replaying the video. This has happened since updating to 20.12.1, and 20.12.2. I used to use 20.12.0 with success, and although Kdenlive did quit when rendering using 20.12.0, I didn't have any problems playing back projects.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open a previous project which has fade in or fade out effects.
2. Play back the video.
3. Once Kdenlive gets to a clip which has a fade in or fade out effect, it quits.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Ubuntu 20.10
KDE Frameworks Version: KDE Frameworks 5.74.0
Qt Version: Qt 5.14.2 (built against 5.14.2)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

MLT version 6.25.0

Have also tried the 20.12.1 appimage version, which seems to reproduce the same results.

Please try with the current Kdenlive AppImage version 20.12.2 to see if crash still happen https://download.kde.org/stable/kdenlive/20.12/linux/

Hi. I have tried the latest AppImage, and opening one of my older projects seems to work okay. However, I also decided to try all the older AppImage versions on that page again just out of curiosity, and they seem to work too. It definitely didn't work last time. Maybe I have had a system update which has fixed it or something. I will try opening with the latest AppImage on my rendering server and let you know.

I have tested the latest AppImage on my rendering server, and it seems to be quitting when I downscale the video preview to 360p and 270p. I'm not sure why this is, but it doesn't do it on my desktop computer. Could the source of the problem actually be scaling issues, rather than Fade in/out effects as I originally thought?

Also, the performance is quite poor on the server when playing back video in the preview window, which I can't understand because the spec is quite a bit faster than my desktop computer. It's fairly fast when rendering, it's just the editing that I can't seem to get to work without it quitting.

Specs are as follows:

Desktop
-------
Intel Core i5 2500S with 8GB DDR3 1333MHz and onboard Intel HD 2000 graphics.

Server
------
Dual Xeon E5-2650 v2's with 24GB DDR3 1066MHz and Nvidia Quadro K620 graphics.
The Nvidia card also has the latest drivers.

How can my desktop pc possibly perform better than the server?
Could it be a bug in Kdenlive with the Nvidia card?

Also, I noticed that Kdenlive is resizing the fonts in my videos to a larger size when opening them on the server. This didn't happen before either.

I have only just installed the OS and it is fully updated, so it can't be that surely.

Any suggestions?

Update: I've fixed the font problem. I forgot to install the font on my system. >.<

Also, I forgot to mention that I have also tried with the server's onboard graphics, and have the same problem with it quitting.

Okay, so the problem seems to be related to the scaling. When I switch to 360p or 270p preview scaling on the server, it crashes. I also have the same problem on the server in Shotcut. Although Shotcut doesn't appear to have a 270p preview scaling option, it does have a 360p option, and when I apply that, it also crashes. As with Kdenlive, any preview scaling above 360p seems to work fine, even with Fade in/out video effects enabled. The video is just choppy when playing back at these resolutions (60% CPU usage on the i5, and all threads being used, and on the server's Xeon's, most of the threads are not even being used. Could this issue be Kdenlive related or MLT related? Thanks

Also, to clarify; my existing projects were saved with 270p preview scaling, which is what prompted me to try adjusting the preview scaling option...

Thank you for all this testing. Seems to be a general issue with effect and monitor preview scaling: https://invent.kde.org/multimedia/kdenlive/-/issues/649.

No problem. Thanks for letting me know emohr. :)

I have now done further testing on this issue. It definitely seems to be a hardware related issue. Please see my post on this page for info https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=430357

It could be beneficial for people with the scaling issue to post their system specs, as it could be related to certain Nvidia hardware and/or certain Intel processors, (such as the Xeon 2650 V2's I was running in the server pc). The i5 2500S in the desktop pc doesn't have scaling issues and only uses the built in HD 2000 graphics. Maybe the i5 supports something the Xeon doesn't?

Also on that note, has Kdenlive had any previous issues with crashing when using dual processors, as I was running 2x 2650 V2's in the server. (The server board chipset is C602 if that helps)

Other than this, I'm not sure what it could be, but I have tested as much as I can at this stage, and I hope it has helped in some way.

I know you have not the old hardware anymore. We fixed today some monitor scaling issue. Could you test tomorrow's daily build?

Hi. The version I'm currently using seems absolutely fine, and has been for a while (even previous versions). No issues at all with scaling. I'm using version 21.04.3 if that helps. :)
