network manager plasma

When open network manager and press on a network interface the "Speed" tab shows us as a default view. I would like to recommend making the "Details" tab as default. I can't remember how many times in my life needed to see the speed of my connection and go to the network manager. I even think that if you removed the "Speed" tab it's not going to be missed.

Another reason to make the "Details" tab as default is that the speed tab needs like 3-4 seconds to show the graph which what exactly the user needs to switch to the speed tab if one day someone need it.

Additionally, in the Details tab, it would be really useful if you make the data can be copied once clicked. For example, once I click the IP, it gets copied to the clipboard (instead of right-clicking then copy).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Click on network manager plasma
2. Select Details tab

OBSERVED RESULT
Speed tab is the default

EXPECTED RESULT
Make Details tab is the default
Make information can be copied

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Kubuntu 20.10
KDE Plasma Version: 5.19.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.74.0
Qt Version: 5.14.2

I agree with this. I never click the network tray icon to see the speed. I often click it to see the details. Having speed as the default means I always need to click details to see them.

I disagree. As a not super technical user, I have no use for information like IP or MAC address. That seems to be information more technical users would want, but for common users, that kind of information is not useful. On the other hand, the speed graph can be a nice way for less technical users to visualize and diagnose connection speed issues.

If that kind of information is accessed so frequently that switching between tabs becomes a nuisance, one alternative would be to make the applet always remember the last accessed tab and show it when it's accessed a second time.

Seems it is partially getting fixed (it will remember the selection, no default is being changed nor the copying issue):

Let's make this bug only about a single issue.

> Additionally, in the Details tab, it would be really useful if you make the data can be copied once clicked. For example, once I click the IP, it gets copied to the clipboard (instead of right-clicking then copy).

This should be reported in its own issue. :)

Regarding copying information, I have opened bug #473840.

I'd also like to have details as the default as that's what I usually look up. However, I could also imagine to get rid of the tabs and combine both by adding a small speed graph on the bottom or top of the details instead. Then you have everything into to view at once. No need to go back and forth.

What default tab is best depends heavily on one's use cases, therefore I don't think we can say with confidence that one is better than the other. That's why a number of Plasma releases ago, we made it remember the last-used tab so you can choose for yourself which tab you prefer.

I totally understand your point. I would say, yes, we can. How many times does someone open the interface to see the traffic speed vs the interface details?

Also if we really cant say, why did KDE choose to go with the speed instead of the actual interface details by default, which is what all OS and desktops are doing.

I would like to second KING here. It might be hard to determine what the default should be but there is still a default that has been selected somehow. I also think the default is wrong - especially since the "speed tab" needs several seconds to show anything meaningful. I think KDE has the goal to have sane and good defaults and I think this one is not a good one. So I think marking this as "RESOLVED" is not a god resolution.

Anyway, I read a few blogposts about user telemetrics. If possible, it would be great to find out how many installs have the default flipped, now that this choice is remembered, I would assume quite a few (of those who ever went into the "details" section, I think must casual users would never use that).
