Created attachment 134691 [details] Colored tiles are shown instead of actual thumbnails SUMMARY No thumbnails are shown for pictures that I downloaded from my old Canon PowerShot A620. Instead, Gwenview only displays a set of colored tiles. They have different colors that correspond to the dominating color of the image (I suppose). Seems like some sort of feature to increase rendering speed, but the actual thumbnails never show up. Viewing the actual image in full size works fine, the thumbnail view, however, is pretty much useless. Thumbnails of other images work fine, it seems to be related to Canon cameras. Found another bug report on a mailing list (423431). Someone reported the exact same issue with a PowerShot A700. The issue applies to both, the importer dialog and the actual image overview within the main window of Gwenviw. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Download pictures from PowerShot A620. 2. Open image overview in Gwenview. OBSERVED RESULT No thumbnails are shown, only a set of colored tiles. EXPECTED RESULT Thumbnails are shown properly. SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Kubuntu 20.04.1 LTS KDE Plasma Version: 5.18.5 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.68.0 Qt Version: 5.12.8 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION I disabled the caching of thumbnails, because opening (full size) images took ages, when caching was enabled. The issue with PowerShot cameras, however, occurs in both cases, having caching enabled or disabled. In folders that contain mixed pictures (PowerShot and others), the thumbnail for other images is shown properly, whereas I get colored tiles for the Canon files only.

I get the image preview as expected on Gwenview 20.12.0. Can you try with a flatpak so you have a more recent version? https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.kde.gwenview
I just checked the flatpak of Gwenview 20.12.0. It does indeed solve the issue and even pictures taken with my Canon PowerShot A620 do show as proper thumbnails. Is anybody familiar with the internals of KDE/Kubuntu, though, and knows if Gwenview 20.12.0 will ever by made available for Kubuntu 20.04 LTS? I know that Ubuntu 20.04.2 is planned for February 4th, but I could not find any roadmap that states what it actually includes (in terms of software updates).
Maybe the same bug as this one? https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=423431
(In reply to bug2019@fantasymail.de from comment #4) > Maybe the same bug as this one? > https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=423431 It does appear to be the same issue. Does the bug disappear for you on the flatpak version? @Acrton, can you please confirm the bug is the same, if so we can mark it as a duplicate and resolved by a newer version.
The flatpak version does not solve this issue for me. Maybe it *seems* to fix it, because the default for "low resource mode" is off. After switching it on and clearing the thumbnail cache the problem is back.
(In reply to Justin Zobel from comment #5) > @Acrton, can you please confirm the bug is the same, if so we can mark it as > a duplicate and resolved by a newer version. That's the issue I referenced in my initial ticket. However, the user in bug 423431 has a Canon PowerShot A700, so I cannot confirm that it is the exact same issue. - But it seems very likely. My camera is a PowerShot A620. Not sure about the problem that bug2019@fantasymail.de from comment #6 reported, though. Seems like he is still having troubles, if though he is using the Gwenview 20.12.0 flatpak.

Seems like he is still having troubles, if though he is > using the Gwenview 20.12.0 flatpak. This issue is only visible in "low resource mode". Did you enable it (Config -> Advanced -> Low resource usage mode)? Also, you need to clear the thumbnail cache in ~/.thumbnails and restart gwenview after enabling. The bug still exists in the current master.

New information was added; changing status for inspection.
Can we ask you to please check if this is still an issue with Gwenview 25.08.0?
Just as a side note, if you want to run an LTS distro that is fine, however they will always have out of date KDE software soon after release as KDE releases often to fix bugs. Running KDE software from a Flatpak or Snap in this case is recommended so you can get the latest bug fixes. The alternative is to run the latest Kubuntu (non LTS). This way your packages will still get slightly out of date, but not by as much.
