SUMMARY
No video preview or thumbnails for any video content

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Look at video in library (thumbnail view). 

OBSERVED RESULT
Preview shows no thumbnail. When double clicking on each video, nothing happens. No video is shown, and no application is launched.

EXPECTED RESULT
Thumbnails and previews for common video types (mov, avi, mp4 etc...)

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux version: Zorin 15.3 (Ubuntu 18.04)

Your digiKam version is compiled without multimedia support. Report the problem to your package distributor. Alternatively, you can use our AppImage from here:

https://files.kde.org/digikam/

Thank you, I think I will try the appimage method instead.

Question: If I uninstall the snap, then install the appimage, are my digikam application settings transferable to the appimage installation? 

ie are the application setting stored in the library, or somewhere else so that I may transfer them?

custom digiKam settings is normally stored in your home directory. So it's compatible with snap and appimage bundles.
