Seems like it could be the same as Bug 430435 or Bug 430273. If you type "baloosearch kind" in a terminal window, does is also give you no results?

Thanks. I had this issue recently, and rebuilding the database with `balooctl purge` worked around it for me. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 430435 ***

Yes, that's why it's marked as a duplicate of a bug report tracking the root cause. Any chance you can upgrade to the git master or unstable build, purge your index and test again? There's a commit in git master that is claimed to fix it.
