Description ivan.planinar 2020-12-01 20:53:56 UTC
SUMMARY

Kmail sometimes displays endless "Please wait" while trying to display the content of the email message. However, it never fetches anything.

There are two workarounds:

1. Select a different email thread, hoping kmail will show the new one. Sometimes this works. However, that's the least effective method.

2. This method usually works - simply press "check mail" button again to re-fetch everything. That essentially fixes this problem.

However, even then kmail can STILL display "please wait" message, so going back and forth with email threads is the way to go for kmail to finally show the message.

EXPECTED RESULT

kmail always displays the requested email content without problems, without the need of "check mail" button.

Hello, how do you reproduce this issue exactly, and is it always reproducible a.k.a. with every email? Additionally, does any message appear on the little bar on the bottom?

Sorry I have since uninstalled kmail and everything akonadi related. I cannot help you further than this, nor I plan to return to kmail.

It wasn't reproducible with every email but after a while. Once the 'connection' was established I could browse all of my mail. But something happened over time (say 10-15mins) so that kmail refused to fetch and show the content anymore. It was random. Why? I don't know. Bugs, aliens?

The little bar on the bottom said something like 'unable to connect to...' wherever I wanted to see the content of my emails after some period of time. As I said in OP, the only way to fix it was to re-engage the whole 'check email' process.

So to summarize this issue:
- Selecting the email message after some period of program inactivity (10-15mins) couldn't fetch the content, displaying an endless 'please wait' message and 'unable to connect...' at the bottom.

With this new info, I can confirm I experienced this once. However, in my case, simply selecting a different email fixed this.
I'm also unsure what makes this happen; I also suspect a long period of inactivity, as I had KMail on my laptop screen while I was watching some videos on my external monitor.

Okay, now this issue definitely occurred to me.

I'm still unaware of the cause or proper means to reproduce, but it seems that either akonadictl fsck fixed this or it fixed itself once I checked email from a different folder. I didn't see the message "unable to connect to..." though, most likely because the issue got fixed before issuing this message.

I was about to report the same issue, see as well:

Update: I found some 180.000 files in ~/.local/share/akonadi/file_lost+found - no idea where they came from. I removed them, and system is responsive again
