SUMMARY The asterisk (*) appears next to my file name to indicate there are unsaved changes. No matter hotkey or menu a save, the asterisk doesn't disappear and the the file is not overwritten to update the changes made. When prompting SaveAs, if I select the file and select to overwrite the old file, it won't and to save any progress I have to keep making new files along the way. Are you sure the file is writable and not open in another application as well? Where is the file located?
The file is only open with Krita and is saved on the desktop. I tried creating a test file in Documents as well, but the same result. > Save doesn't overwrite the file > SaveAs doesn't overwrite the file

Do you get any error messages or is it something that you see by opening the file again? How are you opening the file - by double-clicking on the file on Desktop? By selecting the file from File -> Open, making sure you're on Desktop? Or from Recent Documents? Can you please attach the content of Help -> Show Krita log for bug reports?

This error happens if there is already a file with the name test.kra~ that cannot be removed on the desktop, either because it is open, or because it is write-protected. It can also happen if the Desktop folder isn't writable or if Controlled Access Folder is enabled in Windows Defender (https://docs.krita.org/en/KritaFAQ.html#windows-krita-cannot-save) There really isn't anything we can do about that in Krita: it's not a bug in Krita's code or in Qt's code. I'm really sorry, but we really cannot help you further with this.
I have replicated the same save difficulty in the document folder.
