SUMMARY If a panel is set to "Windows Can Cover" mode, it doesn't play the show/hide animation that it does when it's on "Auto Hide". STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Create a panel in "Windows Can Cover" mode. 2. Maximize a window. 3. Bring your mouse pointer to the edge to make the panel appear. OBSERVED RESULT The panel appears instantly. EXPECTED RESULT The panel should slide in from the edge, like it does in Auto Hide mode. I assume the panel is supposed to behave like that, but I would also love to see the animation working in "Windows Can Cover" mode.
I think that the difference between "auto-hide" and "windows can cover" is the animation that auto-hide shows (and the fact that auto-hide also hides from desktop). This is not a bug, but can be a feature request. Like: To enable the same animation to "windows can cover" panels as in "auto-hide" panels. Personally I would like it configurable, I don't want animations.
I'm afraid the "Windows Can Cover" Panel visibility mode has been removed for Plasma 6 and we aren't planning to bring it back. In its place, we plan to implement an "intelligent auto-hide" or "dodge windows" mode, per Bug 349785. This should hopefully be much better than "Windows Can Cover" ever was, and offer support for its use cases. Thanks for your understanding!
