SUMMARY Stuck at a spinner, but ALT+F2 works, I can then start konsole and then manually start plasmashell, kwin also needs to be started, but I now get: kwin: symbol lookup error: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkwin.so.5: undefined symbol: _ZN14KWaylandServer17XdgShellInterface14surfaceCreatedEPNS_24XdgShellSurfaceInterfaceE Happened after runnign apt update, machine now completely unusable STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. > _ZN14KWaylandServer17XdgShellInterface14surfaceCreatedEPNS_24XdgShellSurfaceInterfaceE It looks like this symbol belongs to kwayland-server/libKWaylandServer.so. I don't use Neon so I don't know which package contains it, but this is definitely a broken update. What happens if you try to upgrade again?
Well, update returned that the system was all up to date. So I reinstalled, and stupid me. I enabled WIFI, should not have done that, ended up in a completely broken system. The latest updates for neon is completely broken, this is the User Edition not the developer edition so I thought it might be more stable. Before the reinstall I tried to select the non wayland plasma, same result.
In that case, if you don't mind, I'll change the product and component of this issue to 'neon' and 'Packages User Edition', respectively.
Sorry was not aware of this, my UI is limited and therefore the overview of the forms here:-) Now I'm back at Windows so I can better see the forms. Absolutely correct the data!
>_ZN14KWaylandServer17XdgShellInterface14surfaceCreatedEPNS_24XdgShellSurfaceInterfaceE It means you have kwin from one version kwayland-server from another. From our POV. Not a bug. What you should be able to do is get to a TTY (control+alt+f2 before logging in) then apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade
Done that, and that is what made it crash. I also tried running it again, hoping that it would find the missing packages but no. And more important, please read the second message I wrote. I reinstalled. That is I burned a USB stick, installed from scratch, and selected format destination partition, and ended up with broken installation. Only thing I saw was a prompt asking for password. This is NOT a local issue this is definitely a package management issue
A bad snapshot today caused an incomplete build to get into user editions. If you are affected downgrade with sudo apt-get install libkwaylandserver5=5.19.5-0xneon+20.04+focal+build10
