The current formal release of krita is version 4.3.0 and you should upgrade to that.
In 4.2.7.1, animation worked fine (as it does in 4.3.0) so you are most probably doing something wrong as a result of misunderstanding how animation in krita works.

It would help if your initial post had information about what version you're using and what operating system you're using as well as a full screen screenshot (.png) showing your animation, the Timeline docker and the Layers docker and the  Animation docker.
