Description Fred Brigham 2020-09-14 07:45:12 UTC
SUMMARY
The "By Manual and Name" and "By Manual and Date" sort options for items are not mentioned in the digiKam Handbook. These options are not intuitive and need explanation.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Refer to digiKam Handbook
2. Go to chapter 31.1.16 "The View Menu"
3. Under "View > Sort Images" there is no mention of the "By Manual and Name" and "By Manual and Date" options.

OBSERVED RESULT
The information is missing.

EXPECTED RESULT
This information is essential because these options are not intuitive.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Windows:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Even if the Handbook cannot be updated immediately, an explanation of these options would be appreciated. I have experimented with the options and observed the result but I am unable to understand the behaviour.

It decides whether the images should be sorted by name or date if the images have not yet been captured by manual sorting. If images were manually sorted extensively, both entries behave identically. So it is only decisive for the manual initial sorting.

You refer to manual sorting, Maik, but I haven't found a way of doing this yet! Manual sorting doesn't appear elsewhere in the menu system or in the Handbook, as far as I am aware.

If you have selected a variant of manual sorting, you can drag and drop an image or images in the thumbnail view to a new position. A popup appears and you can select "Insert Items here".

Thanks, that works fine. The problem was that I was trying to drop the thumbnail I was moving into a space between other thumbnails. This results in a File conflict error message "Files or folders with the same name already exist in the target folder". If I then select "Rename automatically" a copy of the file is produced in addition to the original. I continued experimenting and discovered that the answer is to drop the thumbnail to be moved directly on top of another thumbnail. I then get the popup "Insert items here" and the thumbnail is then moved to the position in front of the target thumbnail.
