I don't think any of the Places lists are alphabetically sorted... Place, Recent, Search For, Devices, Tags.

My gut feeling is you wouldn't want to have to scroll to find a tag you want. You are best served by using hierarchical tags (*) and having a small number of top level tags. You would need "All tags" on the top of the list.

Even if the Tags in the side panel are not sorted, once you have opened "All tags" the Folder View is sorted. You can easily navigate down through the tag structure by expanding tags in turn (navigating hierarchical tags is just like navigating a folder structure).

*) Of course a personal view, but I do make extensive use of tags.
