I don't think this is issue with kdenlive. Please try open "open" dialog from other kde applications, for example KWrite.
Please, specify your Qt and KDE Frameworks version. I believe, you can find those in Kdenlive, Help -> About Kdenlive -> Libraries. Possible downstream bug, 426348 is possible duplicate of this bug.
I will get the kde version tonight. And check the kde file dialog behavior from kwrite. This started, after I added ppa repo and installed from there. When I saw the issue, I uninstalled (purge), removed the repo from sources, and re installed from the ubuntu repo. The issue persisted. IF I launch kdenlive by opening an existing project (by double clicking it in the file browser) Then the save as, open, and new dialogs work, although they look very strange and you dont see drives (computer) - you have to go through /media/ to get to other drives. Otherwise - on file open - I get a big transparent window I can drag around and close etc...
KDE Frameworks 5.44.0 Qt 5.9.5 (built against 5.9.5) The xcb windowing system Okular file open save dialogs work fine.
Additional info: today - even if i open kdenlive by clicking a project file in the system file browser, the open and save dialogs dont work at all. The "select color" dialog in the add title clip editor does the same thing. Transparent with no controls visible.
This might be an incompatibility with Ubuntu version 18.04. Best would be to test with the AppImage https://files.kde.org/kdenlive/release/.
I will try the image and let you know if it works. I tried it with previous kernels - got the same result. I've been using it with 18.04 for a long time. I added the ppa repo and installed from there, and that is when it broke. So, I purged, remove the repo, and re-install from the ubuntu repo - no help. still have the issue. If you don't have any other reports of the file dialog window going transparent, it has to be some particular combination of upgrade, update, this repo that repo wakness particular to kde on my machine. I plan to wipe it and install Ubuntu Studio 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa.
