Created attachment 131404 [details] Big title 1) The font size of sidebar tabs title doesn't respect the system font size and look much bigger than menu, toolbar and window titlebar texts. See attached image for more info. The old design of sidebar with vertical tabs was way better than current design which wastes more vertical space with that big title. 2) There is no way to hide or close fast the sidebar which was possible with old design, for now we should go to menu then hide it.
1) It does respect the system font size, it is just a 2nd level heading and so is bigger that usual text. I think that makes sense since it is a title. 2) There is a toolbar button called “Show Sidebar”. Since your part.rc didn’t get updated (i. e. deleted) at the 1.11 update, you need to add it yourself using Settings -> Configure Toolbars. How did you install/update Okular 1.11? Concerning the vertical space: that is intended, because the sidebar has plenty of vertical space, but horizontal space is stolen from the view area. By moving the tab bar from the left to the top, we get more horizontal space in the view area.

For my small laptop screen 15.6", I use small font size of 9pt and that title looks really big and stand a lot in the GUI. And it's position (centered directly at the top of each tab) is enough to make it stands without making it bigger in size. That's why I said the old design was better because to identify the role of a tab you only look at the icon together with its text in each tab header, but for know you need to look first at the icon in tab header then click on it and then read the title to know what's the role of tab. > 2) There is a toolbar button called “Show Sidebar”. It' more practical and common in all known pdf viewers to have hide button in the sidebar that quickly hides the whole sidebar to the left side or simply to have a close button that remove it completely. And quick hide is more practical to gain more horizontal space while opening and reading different pdfs rather than redesigning the whole sidebar to push all GUI text on vertical space. It' been a year that I started using Manjaro after getting frustrated for more than 6 years with Ubuntu upgrades, and Okular was there from first install.
I'm sorry you don't like the new style. The title text does indeed respect your font size, but it's a bit bigger than whatever the general size is because it's, well, a title. :) We use larger fonts for titles all over the place. This is a common paradigm. It's true that the new view takes up a bit more vertical space, but it takes up much less horizontal space. Space has to come from somewhere. :) No free lunch, I'm afraid. There is in fact a button to hide the whole sidebar which looks like it didn't get added due to a different issue, which David alludes to. We're working on fixing that. Sorry for the breakage. In the meantime you can add it yourself to your toolbar.
