skanlite found devices

Skanlite finds two devices for a single scanner device. The hp officejet 7612 is a multi function and has an A3 glass. I have included an image of the found devices. The first limits the area to A4. The second initially accepted to preview A3, but failed to scan. Subsequently it refuses even to do a preview and nags an invalid argument error message without providing any information at all.

To update the drivers visited the hp website instead this message was shown:
Access Denied
You don't have permission to access "http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01174360" on this server.

Referred to the man page and read the following which seems very funny with the languages that I know. Very serious bug that should be dealt with if intended:
Skanlite was written by Kåre Särs <kare.sars@iki.fi> and Arseniy Lartsev <receive-
       spam@yandex.ru>.

This manual page was written by Kai Wasserbäch <debian@carbon-project.org>, for the
Debian project (and may be used by others).

You mean you cannot access website http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01174360 ? In this case - I accessed it just fine and there is only link to download drivers from https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/

Yes, some people have been so mean and greedy. They fail to see the bug picture and subsequently suffer from their ignorance. Software engineers have a better understanding of the world I believe. It says someone has set permissions. Good to know there is a Maksym Hazevych responding to it.

Thanks for the report.

Did you get the device to work?

It seems that the device supports two scanning protocols and when the sane library searches for scanners it finds both and does not know that it is the same device. The first is a "new" standard network scanning protocol and the second is a HP specific protocol.

I would be interested in getting debug messages in case you have not gotten it to work. Especially if you still get the invalid argument error message.

In that case, could you run Skanlite from the command line with debugging enabled?

SANE_DEBUG_HPAIO=16 skanlite

And then post the output here.

If the output does not seem to provide anything specific to the error you could increase the number and see if that would give more info.

Regards,
  Kåre

Please also try installing HPLIP (see also Bug 428056).

It is now possible to scan full flatbed i.e. A3 with one of the found devices. Actually as mentioned by one of the maintainers one actual device is viewed by two different protocols each with different capabilities.
Comment 7 Nate Graham 2020-12-04 22:45:09 UTC
So it's working now?
