5.0.6 has been released almost exactly a year ago (see https://kmymoney.org/2019/08/18/kmymoney-5-0-6-released.html) and has been superseded by three update versions in the meantime.

If those are not available in your distribution, please try to see if using the AppImage version (KMyMoney 5.1.0) solves the problem. You can download and run it without uninstalling your current version. See https://kmymoney.org/appimage.html for details how easy that is.

We look forward to your reply if that solves the problem.

I downloaded the AppImage yesterday. Then today I tried adding a new category via KMM (not with AppImage) and it worked okay. Was able to add some more test categories under the same heirarchy as before ? Why did that work now ? Anyway, used the AppImage and was able to successfully add a new (sub) category.

Do I continue to use KMM as previously, or now use AppImage ? I assume there is no 'safe' method to install/use the libraries that AppImage is using, as there could well be library clashes, is that correct ?

You can use the Appimage until an equivalent version is available for your distribution. You are correct that the appimage is a complete, standalone version, and copying any files from it to your system is not likely to have a good outcome. I can't say for sure why a newer version works where an older one does not, but lots of bugs were fixed between then and now.

Thanks jack. However the older version doesn't crash now, when I add a new (sub) category ??

Ah. That's even harder to explain, but I usually blame such things on a combination of phase of the moon and some black magic dust. I'll close for now, but reopen if the problem shows up again.

Well, the Schumann resonance has been spiking a lot lately. Frequencies affect computers as well as humans, so as the myth busters would say ...pluasible...:)
