There is no way right now to have the pager show the virtual desktops horizontally (only one row vertically)

I imagine this would be a toggle in the Pager settings

There is *a* way. 

If you go into system settings->virtual desktops and set the number of rows to 1 it will look like this.

Can you confirm if that's what you're actually asking for or if there's something else.

OOOH ok. Sorry. The interface didn't make it clear that those rows were referring to the rows in the Pager as well. 
Guess it could be made clearer somehow, but I wouldn't know how.
