GNOME have a "screencast" feature which allows the user to record a short video (maximum 45 seconds) of the screen by simply using a keyboard shortcut, it would be nice to have this feature on Spectacle, and to be able to activate it using a keyboard shortcut.

So here's how it works: first, you press the keyboard shortcut. It starts to record and shows an icon on the notification area. And then, either you press one more time the same shortcut, or you wait for the recording to end. After that, the recording will go to your Videos folder as a WEBM video.

Might be easy to implement on Wayland given the impending implementation of native compositor screencasting support.

We've had multiple requests to add this to Spectacle, so... maybe? However since it would be using a compositor feature, Spectacle could be just one of multiple potential entry points I suppose. GNOME shell has a global keyboard shortcut to start recording the whole screen which I quite like.

Spectacle currently exposes screen recording application in "Tools" > "Screen recording" like simplescreenrecorder and obs.

But ultimately having an always available shortcut activated, short duration screen recording feature would be nice IMO.
But given this is not a simple feature, I would not expect it soon.

TBH it's not a hard thing to do as soon as the screencasting feature gets merged.

What worries me is that spectacle UX is already quite complex and I don't think we want to end up with anything similar.

Having a ticket somewhere gathering which features we need would be useful. For example I don't really see the 45 second video as something really useful, but then maybe that's just how I generally do the videos and I wouldn't want to extrapolate my experience.

Also assuming that OBS is support it does remove quite a bit the need for yet another app to do the same. Maybe just so it's a bit simpler?

Spectacle 23.04 has this on Wayland now!
