SUMMARY

When using the Activity Switcher, press alt-tab out of it. This will leave the Activity Switcher panel open without being able to close it.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Press super+tab to open Activity Switcher
2. Press Alt+tab immediately after to switch to another window
3. Try your best to close the Activity Switcher side-panel.

OBSERVED RESULT

Activity Switcher remains open, and can only be forcefully closed (either by logging out, or pointing xkill towards it)

EXPECTED RESULT

Activity Switcher closes as soon as focus is lost

In my case the problem is even more severe:

If I use Meta+Tab and hold Meta for more than a spit second there is no way for me to close the activity switcher at all, short of restarting plasma.

It does not close automatically when releasing Meta.
It does not close when pressing ESC.
It does not close when clicking on it and pressing ESC.

It seems to never receive keyboard focus at all, even though mouse input works.
Note that Meta does not appear stuck: Once open, you still need to press Meta to change activity with Tab or Shift+Tab, just Meta for menu still works.

Add miniprogram and close that sidebar. Then the activity sidebar's gone.

While trying to verify that I've run into another problem: I just cant open Activity Switcher anymore. I can switch activity using Meta+Tab, but Activity Switcher does not appear at all anymore

I've stumbled across this too (Neon packages, Plasma 5.19.2, Frameworks 5.771.0, Qt 5.14.2). It seems, however, that when the activity has no open windows, clicking on the switcher and pressing escape hides it. Also, with open windows, invoking `Show desktop` and then clicking on the switcher and pressing escape hides it.

plasma-desktop-5.19.2-cannot-read-property-of-null.patch

Patch possibly fixing this bug.
You can edit file "/usr/share/plasma/shells/org.kde.plasma.desktop/contents/views/Desktop.qml" (with root privileges) and do "plasmashell --replace&" afterwards.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick patch. Unfortunately, the patch doesn't seem to help, I am still stuck with an unclosable activity switcher.

Maybe it's another bug.
I've got situation that Activity Switcher is not hiding after shown by Meta+Tab shortcut.
It's stays open after pressing Esc or selecting activity, only way to close it - do a "plasmashell --replace" in the console.

I have a similar problem. Using Meta+Q (the shortcut to bring up the Activity bar) seems to close it but now switching activities requires two keypresses

Is this the shortcut supposed to be used to close it? If so, it works for me.

Though I wish there were a more intuitive approach and maybe also small button at the bottom/top to close the pane.

It's under Global Shortcuts -> Plasma as just "Activities..." It ordinarily brings up the Activities side bar where you can select and edit activities.
