Can you try a modern version of Okular via flatpak or compile it by yourself?

https://flatpak.org/setup/Ubuntu/

https://okular.kde.org/download.php

Does it happen when you change "Performance" option to the less "greedy" flavor?

https://docs.kde.org/trunk5/en/kdegraphics/okular/configperformance.html

Thanks in advance for your answers.
