Do you drag/drop the mp4 clip into the timeline? 
If so delete the kdenliverc file as descripted here: https://userbase.kde.org/Kdenlive/Manual/Windows_Issues#Cannot_open_projects_made_with_previous_version.2C_timeline_snaps_back.2C_cannot_import_clip

Can you please follow the instruction above and test again? Please also update to the latest version (20.12.3 at the moment, https://kdenlive.org/en/download/) and report here whether this is still happening.
