Expanding spacers don't work in the Main toolbar, but they do work in others, such as the Views toolbar.

what is "Expanding spacers"?

It's under "Configure toolbars" in the settings, under separator. I think they must not have been introduced until recently, but I just noticed them. They're great for centering toolbar buttons, which was previously impossible.
