I've been experiencing quite often a problem in which the following things will happen all together: - The root password dialog that shows up when some application requests it will only accept one character, therefore blocking me from putting my password. - Yakuake will only accept one character in its command line. - The application launcher will not accept any text input in its search functionality. The problem is usually fixed after a system restart, but happens quite often, and has been happening since at least plasma 5.14.5, and continues to happen in plasma 5.17.5. Don't know exactly what triggers it, but most of the times happens since the session is started, with some infrequent exceptions.
Hmm, those apps don't share a high-level UI toolkit, just Qt. Does it happen with any GTK apps too? Or just Qt-based software?
(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #1) > Hmm, those apps don't share a high-level UI toolkit, just Qt. > > Does it happen with any GTK apps too? Or just Qt-based software? I don't have any GTK-based widgets (not sure if it even has some system like QT for that), but as far as I can tell, it doesn't affect any GTK2 nor GTK3 application. OTOH I don't really use any GTK app that would show a pop-up that would allow typing. I'm not sure if it might be a coincidence, but I think it tends to happen more often after I close the IBus panel from the system tray.
Weird.

I am having this same issue as well and it started with my update to Ubuntu 20.10. If I kill the ibus applet I loose the ability to send keyboard input to any QT application search box. However GTK applications seem to be fine.
It seems like ibus is interfering with text input here. Does the problem ever reproduce when ibus is completely disabled?
(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #7) > It seems like ibus is interfering with text input here. Does the problem > ever reproduce when ibus is completely disabled? Yes, but when that happens, they don't even allow inputting a single character.
Eve when you completely disable ibus (not just its system tray item) and reboot?
(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #9) > Eve when you completely disable ibus (not just its system tray item) and > reboot? Yes, even after having aptitude-purged it, but that happens much less often.
Are you still using Plasma 5.18 out of curiosity? Because this is starting to sound like an issue that I recall being fixed in Plasma 5.20.
(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #11) > Are you still using Plasma 5.18 out of curiosity? Because this is starting > to sound like an issue that I recall being fixed in Plasma 5.20. I'm using plasma 5.20.5 with frameworks 5.78.0 and QT 5.15.2.
Boooo. :( Are we just talking about Plasma text fields, or text fields in apps too?
(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #13) > Boooo. :( > > Are we just talking about Plasma text fields, or text fields in apps too? Don't know. The only ones I can tell are affected are: KDE's root password dialog, yakuake, and the application launcher. Sticky notes is still writable, and I don't know about others.
The issue is still present in plasmashell 5.21.4 on Kubuntu 21.04. Leaving the IBus Panel running and everything is fine. Close it and you lose all keyboard input to plasma components. GTK applications seem perfectly fine. Also the IBus Panel does not honor the "Show icon on system tray" setting when the session starts. I have it unchecked (do not show) and yet it comes back on every logon. Checking the box and unchecking it again hides the tray icon.
