What kind of TTS is installed in your system (flite, festival, espeak, svox)?

TTS service is provided by a Qt™ library which wraps speech-dispatcher on Linux, and native speech systems on other platforms. It is possible to choose the current voice via Okular Accessibility configuration page.

The default TTS is speechd TTS, but you can use all languages and voices depending on the available synthesizers on your platform. On Linux, speech-dispatcher is used by default to determine available voices.

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Please try the following command (from console [1]):

spd-conf -d

If you will see an error message or you will not hear "Speech Dispatcher works!" then

1. Ensure that speech-dispatcher is installed. You did not specify your distribution, but for Mageia 7 I have installed the following packages:

- espeak
- lib64dotconf0
- lib64espeak1
- lib64ttspico0
- python3-pyxdg
- speech-dispatcher-conf
- festival-freebsoft-utils
- festlex-CMU
- festlex-POSLEX
- festvox-kallpc-common
- festvox-kallpc16k
- lib64eststring1.2
- lib64speech_tools2.1.1
- speech_tools
- svox-pico
- python3-speechd

2. Ensure that speech-dispatcher is configured properly. Open /etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf (from root [2]) and uncomment your preferrable TTS engine. For example, there is a line

#AddModule "pico"

Remove "#" to obtain

AddModule "pico"

and save the file.

Please report if it helps.

[2] "kdesu kwrite" then edit /etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf

Comment 6 Yuri Chornoivan 2020-02-07 15:00:59 UTC
Your Okular might be too old. Try to install the newer version Okular (at least 19.04).

It might help to install Okular from the snap package.

Looks like the snap package has already been installed...

This might be a packaging (downstream) issue. Can somebody test?

Comment 11 Yuri Chornoivan 2020-02-07 16:56:32 UTC
(In reply to Landy Corral from comment #10)

Okular team does not provide packages by itself and Okular depends on the Qt TTS capabilities. If Qt for the snap package is built without TTS support then the only thing we can do is to ask those guys who build the package to rebuild is accordingly.
