I am sorry that this happens for you.
But I can't reproduce this.
Does input doesn't work in Kate only or other Qt applications, too (e.g. Konsole, Dolphin, ...)?

Hi - thanks for reaching out. This is very frustrating...

I don't have this issue with any other apps on Ubuntu.

I had a similar issue with Microsoft's VS-Code, but fixed it by changing
its keyboard setting from "Code" to "keyCode".
I know this is entirely unrelated, however I mention only to point out that
I was looking all over in Kate for a similar setting, unsuccessfully.

It occurred to me that perhaps its trying to use a German/DE keyboard
mapping or something, but even [BackSpace] doesn't work....and I could
generate any German-Code PAge characters or anything...the key mapping
doesn't follow any logical order.

Is there perhaps a US/English build/version somewhere that is know to
work? Perhaps a prior version that is know to be stable/working for US
keyboards?

Lastly, sorry but I don't know what "Qt" is.....
To my knowledge I don't have any other Qt apps....I'm able to use Gedit
with no issues, Chrome, Firefox, VS-Code, Terminal and File Manager.
I'm using the Bitnami LAMP stack on an AWS virtual machine/instance. I'm
using the XFCE GUI running over RDP/port 3389. The only other app I have
not been able to get working is the Atom editor, it won't even start due to
display issues. Kate starts OK but has the aforementioned key/mapping
issues.

regards,
Steve

The KDE software that is shipped with Ubuntu 16.04 is no longer maintained by KDE developers. Either request support at the bug tracker of your distribution, or update to a distribution which has recent software versions.

can I download and install this independent of their distribution?
