SUMMARY On Kwin Wayland, performance is really bad on my machine. The desktop animations are really sluggish when som windows are open, while on X11 they remain butter smooth. Even after deleting all plasma and kwin related config files, the issue remains. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Start a Wayland session, open the K Menu : the sliding animation is butter smooth 2. Open Dolphin (for instance) 3. Open the K menu : the sliding animation of the K menu is really sluggish OBSERVED RESULT The panel opening animation is not smooth. EXPECTED RESULT The animation should remain butter smooth with only one window open, as it is on X11. SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Windows: macOS: Linux/KDE Plasma: (available in About System) KDE Plasma Version: 5.17.5 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.66 Qt Version: 5.14.0 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Archlinux, Intel Integrated Graphics (8Th Gen CPU).
Additional info ? The problem seems to occur with Qt applications only (Dolphin, Konsole...), but if Firefox is open for example, the K menu sliding animation remains smooth... Maybe a bug in recent Qt ?
I was wrong in my previous comment, Gnome's file manager makes the animations sluggish too ; but Firefox is not afected. If Firefox is the only open window on the screen, the performance remains butter smooth. Tested also on Plasma 5.17.90.
I did some testing and went to the conclusion that the problem occurs with Dolphin only. It seems to be a problem related to icons, because if I change the size of the icons in Dolphin, sometimes the problem disappears and animations are smooth. I cannot seem to find a setting that makes animations smooth at all times, though. Tested on Plasma 5.17.90.
any update on that? in plasma 5.23 the performance remains much lower than the experience in xorg.
On wayland, kwin doesn't do triple buffering due to various technical reasons
