SUMMARY

In light room there's a handy function to dim all elements but the image so that  the controls can still be used but ain't longer intrusive.
It would be convenient to have such a function in gwenview as well.

Gwenview has a full screen view that basically does this. Is this not sufficient?

After thinking about it again and knowing that one can hide the sidebar, you are right. Sorry for the noise. :)
