Description Anders Lund 2019-11-26 09:35:52 UTC
In digikam it is possible to move files and folders around, by drag and drop. But doing so leads to DATA LOSS, as digikam fails to update its database when files are moved FROM WITHIN DIGIKAM. Lost data includes ANY metadata in the digikam database.

THAT SUCKS.

Apart from the data deletion, digikam also does not provide progress information during moving files. Not a problem while moving one or even a few files, but duging moving many (like 1000s) files, this leads to a riske of FILE LOSS.

THAT SUCKS TOO.

Sorry, actually my metadata is preserved, but progress information is still missing.
Comment 2 Maik Qualmann 2019-11-26 09:41:25 UTC
Which version of digiKam are we talking about exactly? DigiKam will not lose any metadata if the move fails anymore. There is also a progress bar in the status bar in current versions. Moving files within a partition can be done so fast that the progress bar does not even appear.

Yes, I realized that the metadata part of my issues actually have been fixed - I am very greatful with that!

I use latest package from archlinux, 6.4, and there is no progress bar that I can see. I use the harddisk blinking thing on my laptop to decide if I believe it is still in progress, and also digikam does not reflect moves untill it is all done.

Due to space requirement, I have to move albums once in a while, from my laptop disk to a portable one, so I move many thousand images by dragging the albums around.

There is definitely a progress bar for file operations and the ability to cancel them. Copy many and big files (videos) and you will see it. A move operation inside the partition is very fast. What you see later on your hard drives LED is updating the database, which work in the background. The files have long been moved.

Maybe the progressbar only shows pr file? I moved thousands of files and never saw a progress bar.

Here is a screenshot of the progress bar when moving images to a network drive, leaving time for the screenshot.

The progress bar has been expanded to show the cancel button.
