SUMMARY

If an automask rectangle is placed on a clip it is possible to shape it by dragging the edges. However it is possible to drag one side over the other, resulting in a "negative" region and thus no effect is actually applied.

The automask effect if being rewritten for the next major release of MLT (version 7). We are tracking progress of this task here in case you'd like to follow up: https://invent.kde.org/multimedia/kdenlive/-/issues/991

Will close this issue here. Do test after the release and let us know if it still happens.
