Description skoupad-bugzilla 2019-10-22 18:34:36 UTC
I couldn't find something similar, so I am making this feature request.

If it's possible, please add an option to change video thumbnail. The automatic mechanism that makes the thumbnails for videos, many times falls on a black frame or on a point of the video that shows a blank wall because the camera was panning. That makes it very difficult to recognize videos from their thumbnails.

I am thinking something like, in preview mode, there could be a button that says "Use this frame as the video thumbnail." or something like that.

In the last two versions of digiKam we had a problem with H264 (MOV, MP4) files, the thumbnail was always from the beginning. This is now fixed in digiKam 6.4.0. I think more will not be necessary.

That's great news.

But I still think that there should be a tool for the user to choose his own video thumbnail (after the automatic mechanism). A thumbnail is useful for quick recognition of the video file. But what if the automatic mechanism chooses a part of the video that has no meaning for the user. If the user could choose which part of the video would be the thumbnail, then the user could choose a frame that could give all the info he needs to recognize what this video is all about just by the thumbnail information.

And a question: What will happen to the videos that are already imported to digikam and, due to this bug, got a black thumbnail? Will they be renewed with 6.4.0? Will updating to 6.4.0 change the thumbnails of what's already imported or we will have to deal with black thumbnails for the videos which where imported with the bugged versions? If there was a tool for the user to customize video thumbnails this would be an easy fix.

This was the bug report: Bug 412880

With digiKam-6.4.0 a simple "F5" would be enough to create new thumbnails for the currently active album. Or with the maintenance tool for the entire collection. At the moment after 10% of the video is created a thumbnail. Also conceivable would be a random function that works between 10-20%. But even a shortcut key in the video player that saves a frame as a thumbnail would be possible. But I also have to say that with all my test videos I do not really have a problem with the thumbnail.

F5 seems like a quick and easy fix. Thank you for the solution!

About the tool I am proposing. If there aren't any programming difficulties implementing this tool, is there any other reason not to at least consider it?

Different people have different needs and they use the same software in different ways. In my eyes it's better to have a tool and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Fixed with #398386

I am a bit confused. How is this bug solved with #398386? How can I change the automated thumbnail digikam creates for videos with my own image (for example using a frame captured from the video)?

#398386 only allows to save a frame from a video. How can I set it as the video's thumbnail?

I didn't find a way to use custom thumbnails for videos. Am I missing something?
