SUMMARY

I've two audio outputs on my PC, the HDMI and the Headset. When I turn of my PC with the output set to my headset, on the next boot the audio plays on HDMI even with the headset as default output. So if I want to use the headset, I've to set the output to HDMI and set to headset after.

I'm using Kubuntu 19.10 and the kubuntu-ppa-backports, I'm on KDE Plasma 5.17, but this happens on older version too.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Set default output to headset
2. Turn Off the PC
3. Boot it again

OBSERVED RESULT
The audio plays on wrong output, even with the output set to the headset, it plays on HDMI. So if I want to use the headset, I've to set the output to HDMI and set to headset after.

EXPECTED RESULT
Audio playing on correct output

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Kubuntu 19.10 (kubuntu-ppa-backports)
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version: 5.17
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.62.0
Qt Version: 5.12.4

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Maybe the output just needs to be refreshed after the logon.

How are you setting the audio output to your headset?
Comment 2 Fagner Luan 2019-10-19 15:40:12 UTC
I'm using the applet (?) on the notification area as shown on image, or in the properties in the volume icon (I'm not on computer right now, I don't remember exactly), IIRC both has this bug.

It works well, I tried with 3 different outputs and I can change between them without problems. The problem is on boot, the applet remembers my last choice, but for some reason the audio is on another output.

Thanks, that's helpful. I'll investigate.
Comment 4 David Edmundson 2019-10-20 14:35:54 UTC
Our login sound (because of reasons) currently is through phonon directly rather than libnotifications, it's plausible it misses the relevant metadata
Comment 5 Fagner Luan 2019-10-20 19:29:30 UTC
Oh man... I found another thing that I didn't noticed, even if I set the default output to HDMI, when I restart, the default output is set to my headset, but the sound plays on HDMI anyway. A another thing is that Falkon browser is the only one software tested that respect the choice on the notification, only in Falkon the audio plays on headset, Firefox, VLC, games plays on HDMI.

I think that is something after the logon, maybe the applet recognize the headset as new output and set it as default, but without change it system wise. Maybe it should store what is the last used output, and after the logon it refresh.

I am experiencing this also and posted an issue about it (without seeing this one) here https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=425778.

Basically comment 5 (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=413149#c5) is correct (at least for me). I boot up and always have to change output in order to get the right output (even when the right output is already selected).

It's a weird issue I am experiencing on KDE Neon 5.19 and no other distro (Fedora KDE Spin, Ubuntu and Manjaro) on the same machine.

Is this still a problem?
