SUMMARY
This bug has been happening for years now ; when trying to resize Kmail in a Plasma Wayland session, kmail freezes completely. Same thing when trying to maximize it. 

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Use Plasma Wayland
2. Launch Kmail
3. Resize it / Maximize it.

OBSERVED RESULT
Kmail hangs, have to force close it.

Kmail is still unusable on Wayland, it will crash just after freeze after resizing the window.

The issue is stll happening on Wayland. Running kmail (or kontact) with QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb works but it is a little disappointing that ther ehasn't been any progress on this in years.

I confirm the problem. 

Not that before crashing, the mail pane on the lower right part stays black (see the attachment). I don't know if the problems are related. I can open another issue if needed.

It's the same issue for me. Even if you remove the mail preview pane, kmail is not usable on Wayland, it doesn't directly freeze but there are many glitches.
