Description Brian DuSell 2019-10-08 01:07:35 UTC
On a consistent basis, my noise-canceling Bluetooth headphones spontaneously stop playing audio despite showing up as "connected" in the Bluetooth desktop tray widget. The headphones seem to be able to connect normally, but after some period of time of playing audio, usually a few minutes, the audio will stop playing. A minute or so later, the headphones will disconnect entirely. It seems to have the same behavior as if the headphones were moved out of range of the Bluetooth adapter. Disconnecting and reconnecting via the KDE UI temporarily fixes the problem, but the headphones will always stop working again within a matter of minutes. My Bluetooth headphones are effectively unusable on my system.

This is a problem that was newly introduced sometime in July 2019, as I never encountered this issue before then. Indeed, reverting my Arch Linux distribution to July 4, 2019 solves the issue. I am using the latest KDE packages for Arch Linux.

The problem also seems to be limited to certain headphone models. My model is Sony WH-1000XM2. Another user reported having similar (but not identical) problems with the Sony WH-1000XM3, and no problems with a pair of Chinese wireless headphones.

I've posted this issue on the Arch Linux forums here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=249173
Based on the discussion there, I have reason to believe that the problem may be specific to KDE and not a deeper problem. I could be wrong.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Sync and connect Bluetooth headphones (Sony WH-1000XM2 is known to have this problem)
2. Play audio for a few minutes, until the headphones stop playing audio and eventually disconnect

OBSERVED RESULT
After connecting and playing audio for a while, the headphones spontaneously stop playing audio and eventually disconnect.

EXPECTED RESULT
The headphones should work normally, as they did with versions of KDE before July 2019.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
OS: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.16.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.62.0
Qt Version: 5.13.1

Headphone model: WH-1000XM2

Any thoughts?
Comment 2 audun 2022-07-04 10:10:00 UTC
I came across this bug while reporting a unrelated bug, and I happen to have Sony WH-1000XM2 and KDE on arch.

I haven't had any problems, but I'm using pipewire instead of pulseaudio. Are you still experiencing issues? Let me know and I might be able to help.

Issues like this are almost always not caused by anything in Plasma. Plasma really only tells the underlying system (bluez) to connect to a device, what happens after that is outside of Plasma's involvement/control

What part of the stack would it be in? Bluez or the kernel?

Anyway to get logging to check (so I can write this down for my bug triaging notes and avoid bugging you in the future :) )?

I don't know. I'm not familiar enough with the lower workings of bluetooth to judge that

"journalctl _COMM=bluetoothd" gives you logs about bluetooth, but I don't really know what to look for in it in this case
Comment 7 Nate Graham 2022-09-09 17:28:52 UTC
Anyone affected, could you gather a log with `journalctl _COMM=bluetoothd` that shows the output (if any) when the headphones disconnect?
