SUMMARY
I have installed on too computers - one Windows 7 (laptop - thinkpad) and one Windows 10 (stationeray, based on threadpiper 2950x)
The program starts ok, but when I change album to go down the three and chose a catalogue it stops to work and dies afer a couple of seconds.

1. How many images does your collection contain?
2. After the first start, it may take several hours, depending on the size of the collection, for the collection to be scanned and all information entered in the database.
3. Which database do you use? (SQLite / MySQL)
4. Where is the database local / network?
5. Download DebugView from Microsoft and start it. Post the output of digiKam messages when the event occurs.

I think that issue is fixed in the pre-release version of digiKam-6.4.0. Please test this version from here:
