SUMMARY I recently came across the Baen Free library. They offer ebooks to read in many formats. Usually, my preferred format is epub, so I downloaded one. I tried to open it in Okular to verify if it's DRM free, but it failed to open. However, because from opening fine in FBReader, I can tell it's DRM free and thus should work. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Download http://baencd.freedoors.org/Books/Echoes%20of%20Honor/Echoes_of_Honor.epub 2. Open it in Okular, with okular-extra-backends installed OBSERVED RESULT Error: Could not open file EXPECTED RESULT Ebook opened SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Windows: N/A macOS: N/A Linux/KDE Plasma: Kubuntu 19.04 (available in About System) KDE Plasma Version: 5.15.4 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.56.0 Qt Version: 5.12.2 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Package: okular-extra-backends Version: 4:18.12.3-0ubuntu1

Works just fine for me. If your distribution is not too old can you try installing Okular from flathub https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.kde.okular and see if that version works for you?

That's odd. I'm assuming you tried the linked ePub and not just any ePub? Cause all other ePubs I've tried work just fine. I'll update from Disco Dingo to Eoan Eremine in a few days and see if that fixes it, as it should update KDE applications from 18.10 to 19.04. PS. Sorry for the slow answer, the notification ended up in spam... I've altered my filters so it doesn't happen again.

I can confirm that the linked epub can be opened in recent versions of Okular (at least 1.8). The bug you have encountered must be fixed several months ago.
Kubuntu 19.10 Eoan Eremine has Okular 1.7.3 and it opens the problematic file just fine. Thanks for the help!
