Please fill in the software versions information requested
Comment 2 Christoph Feck 2019-09-16 21:29:35 UTC
The version information is still missing. Please add the version information from the "About Palapeli..." dialog (also from "Libraries" tab).
Comment 3 athomeone05 2019-09-17 12:47:50 UTC
From "About Palapeli":

Palapeli
Version 2.0
Using KDE Development Platform 4.14.16

I don't know where "Libraries" tab is.

Meanwhile, I was able to reset the Menu Bar. I think I did this by clicking on "Defaults" in "Configure Toolbars", but I'm not sure because I was trying everything.

KDE 4 is long unmaintained. Please use a distribution with recent software versions.

"Please use a distribution with recent software versions."

Sorry, I don't know what that means. I am using Linux Mint 18.3 'Sylvia'. The only software version of Palapeli that I can see is version 2.0.

As I said, I think that I've returned to the original default settings, so I can play the game.

I wonder if anyone is interested in suggestions for this program. If so, please see:

http://lenagames.com/bigjig.htm

In this game, it is much easier to move pieces from window to window. Also, it is easier to change the background. And there is no reason to highlight chosen pieces.

If there is a version of Palapeli newer than 2.0, please explain how I can obtain it.

If all of this seems to be a waste of your time, please excuse me and don't bother to reply. I will be happy playing the game as it is.

Linux Mint 18 is old and thus only offers old software versions. You can either download Mint 19 from https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php or try other recent Linux distributions. Note that Mint developers couldn't cope with the speed of releases of KDE software, and decided to no longer support a KDE based Mint version.

If your distribution has flatpak support you can also try to install palapeli from flathub

https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.kde.palapeli

I wrote the last significant feature changes to the Palapeli app in 2014-5, using KDE 4 libraries. It has since been ported by other programmers to use Frameworks (KF5) libraries. The libraries provide the menu bar contents in either case.

I wish I had known about that app when I was writing the "large puzzle" extensions for Palapeli...:-(

Also, using the mouse wheel to rotate pieces is a great idea. As you know, Palapeli only shuffles the positions of pieces, not the orientation.

I guess there is not, except the change to make your puzzle-library's display 2-dimensional --- otherwise only the mods required to add language translations and remain compatible with newer versions of KDE and Qt libraries whenever they are released.

As am I :-) ... using very old KDE 4 libraries on Apple OS X and Macports.

Wow! I really didn't expect so much attention. Thank you.

Christoph Feck -
As you can probably tell, I am pretty unfamiliar with the Linux operating system as well as the correct use of the "KDE Bugtracking System." Thank you for suggesting to move up to Mint 19, but I will follow the advice of the person who said, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Albert Astals Cid -
Thank you for your suggestion. Yes, I think that Linux Mint 18.3 shows Palapeli (flathub) in the Software Manager, but I'm not sure what this does or how to use it. Like I said, it is now working well enough for me.

Ian Wadham -
I especially want to thank you for explaining that the changes that have been made to Palapeli after version 2.0, are changes that really don't effect users like me. Also, thank you for taking the time to look at the BigJig program. I had spent years playing that program on various Windows operating systems, but didn't want to contaminate my Linux Mint with Wine. So, I found Palapeli to be a good substitute. I especially like the fact that the puzzle pieces are all different, unlike BigJig.

As I noted above, everything seems to be working well within the parameters of my requirements and knowledge.

Sincere thanks for you attention.
