2. Select 'Symbols' in 'Select a category' list menu
3. Select 'Chess Symbols' in 'Select a block to be displayed' list menu

Chess symbols displaying as squares, as if not supported by the font being used.

EXPECTED RESULT
Chess symbols having appearance of actual chess pieces.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Comment 1 Christoph Feck 2019-09-07 11:14:31 UTC
Please try block Symbols > "Miscellanous Symbols". Chess symbols are at position U+2654 ... U+265F.

The new "Chess Symbols" block at U+1FA00 contains heterodox chess variety symbols, which you probably do not want.

This is not an application bug. None of the fonts you have installed contains glyphs for these symbols. This is not surprising, since the assignment in Unicode is recent and font authors need time to catch up. Remedy: install a font that contains them, e.g. Symbola 12. <http://users.teilar.gr/~g1951d/>

Yes, thank you, the issue was resolved. Indeed, I was looking for chess symbols in the wrong block (as was suggested in Comment 1).
