Description Nick Stefanov 2019-09-01 09:45:52 UTC
SUMMARY
Plasma 5 keeps randomizing my desktop icons

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. There's no reproducible sequence
2.
3.

OBSERVED RESULT
Sometimes, at random, my icons on the desktop are shuffled like this:
https://i.imgur.com/28PuPBC.png

*Notice they also go one level up on the screen.

I want them like this:

It happens in different conditions like restart or even sleep. I can restart 100 times ant the icons arrangement will be ok but at some point they will stir up. It can be ok for days but then for some reason the bug is triggered.

I tired to arrange my icons again and again and I finally decided to file a bug. This bug exists on my end since 5.14. I use Folder View layout.

EXPECTED RESULT
Never randomize my desktop icons.

I also encountered this bug after upgrading from Debian stretch to buster (plasmashell 5.8.6 -> 5.14.5.1):
After login, the positions of the symbols on the desktop (like the trash bin) are lost and all symbols end up gathered in the top left corner of the screen.

However, I noticed that playing with the options (right click > Configure workspace > Symbols) made the bug disappear (didn't saw it in a month or so).

Sadly I can't recall what helped exactly, but this is my config (relevant content from ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc):

[Containments][27][General]
    // ItemsGeometries left out, it just contains the applets's size/positions
ToolBoxButtonState=topleft
arrangement=1
positions=15,8,desktop:/file1.desktop,14,7,desktop:/file2.desktop,14,6,desktop:/file3.desktop,0,5
sortMode=-1

This file apparently only contains the deviations from the defaults of "right click > Configure workspace > Symbols", so not every option is mentioned here.

How does your config look like? Maybe we can see some differences...

Hello,
Thank you for opting in :)

Here's my file:

https://pastebin.com/8a8FHF6d

However, I have no such option like "right click > Configure workspace > Symbols".

Plasma 5.17 - the bug persists!

It happens almost everyday...

Even locking icons doesn't help. With locked icons it shuffles them two days in a row...

Yeah, sorry, I had a non-English GUI and wrongly translated it back to English. It's called "right click > Configure Desktop > Icons".

Currently I have the same config as you but can't reproduce it neither on my 1600x1200 screen nor on 1920x1080.

I *guess* under certain conditions the icons get misaligned and don't match the "grid" they usually form and then their positions are reset (so maybe you could try to change the icon size so that this grid is different).
However, I currently don't know where to look for this behaviour in the code...

Hello,
They aren't misaligned but shuffled and they go one position up as I show in my screenshots.
Thank you for your help and for your answer. Any help is greatly appreciated.
It's a shame devs didn't answered so much time :(

Changing the icons size doesn't help either. They shuffled on the third restart...

I was just hypothesizing what might happen in the code...
Comment 12 Nick Stefanov 2019-10-28 22:33:59 UTC
Yeah, thanks for that :)
Comment 13 Nick Stefanov 2019-11-05 11:37:22 UTC
This bug upgrades itself. There's no need to restart now. The last randomizing occurs only from wake up the display. The OS itself wasn't turned off, restarted or suspended. It's only the monitor was turned off in according with settings to turn it off after 10 minutes and then awoken.

Please, tell me what other info do you need and what can I do for this nasty bug.

Thanks, I'll let you know. Also please let's continue the discussion on the master bug (bug 354802).

I'm using the workaround from this bug and it's working great:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=389705

I testing it 2 weeks already and there are not problems at all! No more icon scramble, no more double grid icons! Devs, this can point you to the root of the problem for sure.
