Doesn't tell us anything about which kpatience version you're using.

Can you please tell us which kpat (or kpatience) version does your package manager say you're running?

Hmmm? In kpat/help/about it says 3.6 but synaptic says 4:17.12.3-Obuntu1. So I don't remember if I installed if from the package manager or downloaded from the net.

I found it --it was a snap package; the package manager doesn't recognize that it is installed at all. Since this version of Mint wasn't KDE I didn't expect to find it in the package manager at all.

So I removed the snap version and installed the package version which, of course, includes all the dependencies. Now it works fine. Sorry for the false alarm.
