Thank you for reporting. Form 19.08 onwards a track has to be active that edit operations can be performed (click on V1/A1 to make it yellow/active). The advantage of this concept is that you can decide if the video and audio or only the video/audio gets extracted/lifted, depends which track is active. Please read the news about 3 point editing with keyboard shortcuts. https://kdenlive.org/en/2019/08/kdenlive-19-08-released/ I'm waiting on your feedback to update the description on the news page to make it more precise.
Yes, I know how to make "track active"... I'm not sure I explained my situation very well. Let me try again. Assume you have several videos/slides/titles which extends to about 1 hour. Then you decide that you want to remove one minute somewhere in the middle. You can do this no problem. The removing is not the issue. The question is this - now you are left with a one-minute gap in the timeline. It would be nice once you delete the one minute, everything that comes after the clip, will move up to close the gap. Since this does not work, now I have to manually move each little video clip/title separately. Very time consuming - there must be a better way. Does that make sense? Thanks Pance
Shift+x should work with Kdenlive 19.12. Tested as follow: set in- and out-point in the timeline. Shift+x extract the clip and close the gap.

I've upgraded to 19.12.0, still no luck. I just use the scissors to cut. I don't understand what you mean by "set in-point" and "set out-point". I've looked all over the menu system, and do not see "set in-point". Where is that?? Pance
Created attachment 125224 [details] shift-x I made a short screengrab to explain how shift-x works with 19.12.1.
