SUMMARY

I set up an Income and Expense report to break the columns down into weekly. I then de-selected the categories (business-related) that I didn't want showing in the report since I plan on using this report to help with our budgeting.

When I did that I got a warning that transfers wouldn't be shown in the report.

It would be really beneficial if you could set it up so transfers would still be shown, no matter how you narrow down your report's results.

As it stands, I have to do separate deposits and withdrawals for each transaction (total of 3) just to make this work and show up on our reports vs. doing a simple transfer (total of 1).

I hope this is something that can be fixed to simplify my workflow in the program.

Can you provide a sample file that contains the data how you organize it and describe what you want to achieve based on this sample data? That would be a lot easier to understand. Thanks in advance.

Warning when running report

You can see the warning message about transfers when you deselect any of the categories that are included in the report

Setting up envelopes

My original plan was to set these envelope categories as actual accounts. Then each week transfer the money into the KMyMoney account so it didn't show up in my check register. Then as I bought fuel, I would transfer from the envelope account back into the checking account to cover that expense.

But the software wouldn't allow my reports to show transfers since I de-selected some of the categories. Thus the report was useless for how we want to budget.

I got around this problem by setting up the envelopes as categories, and each week the money gets withdrawn so we can see how much we have at the end of each week after the bills are paid.

Then when it comes time to pay from an envelope I will enter a withdrawal for (Exxon - $50), and then enter a deposit (envelope, auto fuel - $50).

Then when I run the report the next time it will show I have $125 in the auto fuel envelope.

Basically, I'm shuffling money around so we don't overspend.

Sample file showing the possible setup with envelope accounts

This is actually not a bug but a user question. I will answer it anyway. Please use the attached file to see what I did. The file contains the following:

1) a salary income on the first of the month into the current account
2) a split transfer from the current account to the envelope accounts which sums up the salary and leaves no more money in the current account.
3) payments made out of the envelope accounts
4) a income/expense report showing your actual income and expenses
5) a networth report showing your financial situation
6) the home view also shows what is left in each envelope
7) example schedule to do all in one transaction on a monthly basis

At the end of a month, one would transfer all remaining money in the envelopes into the savings account so that all others show a zero balance. Then the next month (period) starts (see schedule).

I know that this becomes tricky to balance with the bank statement and it might be some work but it should solve your situation.

In case of a regular salary payment I would suggest to setup a scheduled transaction. Then, the whole process to receive the salary a split it into the envelope accounts is a matter of a few keystrokes each period.

In case you want to discuss this further, please use the mailing list or forum (see https://kmymoney.org/support.php for details)
