SUMMARY Dolphin does not support touchscreens well. This would be aided by providing ability for touchscreen users to select more than one file/folder at a time. Currently, when a user taps a file/folder, it is selected, when the user taps another, it is selected, but the first one is deselected. If the users clicks in the top left hand corner of the icon, sometimes a user can multi-select, but the icon has to be large enough and even then it is hit-and-miss. The multi-select zone in the top left corner of an icon may work well for touchpad/mouse, but is not suited to touchscreen. [User expects (in line with common protocol in other apps): 1) 1 finger tap to select 2) 1 finger double tap icon to open 3) 1 finger swipe to multi select 4) 2 finger swipe to scroll 5) 2 fingers pinch to zoom 6) 1 finger long press to get context menu]
This is certainly a UX issue, I'd really like to see this implemented.
So in a way this bug report is now resolved with the introduction of the selection mode feature in Dolphin 22.12. It allows multi-selection by first entering selection mode through a long press (https://invent.kde.org/system/dolphin/-/commit/71ea4a88d890949500d05aa21839ad93ec6bdb1d) and then tapping the files one wants to select. There are unfortunately multiple feature requests in this bug report which makes things confusing. I don't think we should implement all of the exact behaviours mentioned above. Single-tap to open a file or folder isn't inherently wrong. I agree that we most definitely want 2 finger swipe for scroll. The context menu is now integrated into the selection mode. I'll mark this as resolved because, for one, the bug of the title of the bug report has been fixed and secondly because the situation has fundamentally changed with today's release. Feel free to re-report aspects of this bug report that still persist with the latest version.
