SUMMARY

This started when my distribution switched from ktorrent 4 to 5 (i.e. as of Fedora Core 26), but it's still present with ktorrent 5.1.1 under Fedora Core 29.

The GUI freezes up pretty regularly, like maybe every 2 minutes, and freezes for several seconds at a time. KTorrent's network activity freezes up at this time too. Meanwhile, KTorrent thrashes the disk, and "top" shows its status as D, i.e. "disk wait". It also happens during operations that wouldn't seem to trigger such a thing, e.g. clicking a column-header in the "Peers" view. It's pretty debilitating.

During these freezes, "fatrace | grep ktorrent" reports a ton of reads/writes to .local/share/ktorrent/tor*/{stats*,.*}. Hopefully that helps narrow down the problem.

Note that KTorrent 4 didn't have this problem.
