I think the option for kmail to have systray icon enabled by default should be on under appearance>general. It likely is on newer versions.

I don't understand your bug.
It's always under appearance-> general
so what is the problem ?

It should be on by default, without user having to touch it (I use outdated version of kmail).

The request is to have it on by default.
