Description 129492de 2018-12-09 09:13:42 UTC
Several of the most used IM services are absent (WhatsApp, QQ, Wechat, Viber, LINE, KakaoTalk, Telegram, Signal, Kik, Google Hangouts, etc.). Some of the newer IM apps use the phone number as ID (WhatsAPP, Telegram, Signal, etc), so their absence is not so serious. But others like QQ and Wechat (universally used in China) and LINE (universally used in Taiwan and Japan) make kaddressbook much less useful in those countries.

More importantly, because kaddressbook can't include a list of all IM services used in the world, it needs to include the ability to add a custom service. Compare with the Contacts app on Android, where besides selecting and IM service from the list you can also add a custom service.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Manjaro, 19.19.6-1 kernel
KDE Plasma Version: 5.14.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.52.0
Qt Version: 5.11.2

Android IM selection

I can't really add a useful screenshot of the services selection because Spectacle doesn't work when when a drop-down menu is selected (why is that?). I've added a screenshot of the new contact dialog, the same as the dialog for editing a contact, where you can see the Messaging section.

I've also added a screenshot of the IM services on Android's Contacts app, showing the services available and the "Custom" option. The iOS Contacts app works similarly, with a custom service option.

Ok.
but what do you add in "custom" dialog box on android contact apps ?

If the user needs to add an IM service not on the list, he should be able to type the name of the service, e.g. "qq" for QQ, or "telegram" for telegram, which, when exported as vCard, or updated on the DAV server, other application should be able to recognize as an IM ID and display accordingly (i.e. use the vCard impp key, not a kaddressbook specific key). The same way, when using a vCard with and impp value kaddressbook doesn't recognize, it should still display it appropriately under Messaging.

There is no way to control how user will input their custom service name, so different users may use different names for the same service, this is impossible to avoid, but it might be helped by having most of widely used services on the drop-down menu, especially if already in other contacts management apps (e.g. both Android and iOS have QQ in their selection).

I can confirm the situation is still very much as described above. QQ was added to the list, but more were not, and it's still not possible to add a custom service.
