The current get-hot-new-stuff is a star. This is semantically incorrect, since star iconography means "favorite" or "bookmark" in other contexts. It's also a missed opportunity to define a distinctive visual marker for the feature. Let's come up with a better icon for the Get Hot New Stuff functionality; something distinctive that really communicates, well, "get hot new stuff!" Something almost logo-like, if possible.
Just brainstorming here... How about a package on fire?
That would be very negative iconography; I don't think so. "Hot" in this context should mean "cool" not "on fire, destroyed!" :) In fact, the word "hot" is not actually used visibly, so we probably don't need to take that into consideration.
Something shiny... A shiny box or package, maybe like this: http://all4desktop.com/data_images/original/4240519-gift.jpg but simpler and without the Christmas decorations, of course.

Yeah, box-with-an-arrow iconography makes sense to me.
I kinda like this one: https://www.flaticon.com/free-icon/package_1067555#term=box&page=1&position=19 We could even combine it with gift/present/heart iconography: - https://www.flaticon.com/free-icon/heart-box_913241#term=gift&page=1&position=15 - https://www.flaticon.com/free-icon/donation_940919#term=gift&page=1&position=52 - https://www.flaticon.com/free-icon/giftbox_324687#term=box&page=1&position=36 - https://www.flaticon.com/free-icon/gift_1057391#term=box&page=1&position=60

Git commit dc13d172fdc889bc7c00df6829021eebf6769fd4 by Nate Graham. Committed on 23/10/2019 at 02:25. Pushed by ngraham into branch 'master'. Use a more correct and appropriate visual metaphor for "get hot new stuff" icon Summary: Right now it's a duplicate (not even a symlink) of the `favorite` icon, which is semantically inaccurate. A more appropriate visual metaphor is "download", since that's what GHNS will do. So this patch symlinks the GHNS icon to `edit-download`. This makes it work for icons-only buttons as well, where the icon alone is sufficient to communicate what will happen. Thanks for @ndavis for suggesting this.
