Currently in Digikam it is not possible to copy (ctrl-c) an image and paste (ctrl-v) it in a file manager or on the desktop. You can only paste it in an other digikam album. Drag & Drop works between digikam and filemanager, but is a copy operation, instead of a move operation (which would be more intuitive, as drag and drop normally is a move operation)
Which file manager do you use? Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V works very well with Dolphin. It also works under Windows with the File Explorer. Yes, drag & drop to outside of digiKam is a copy action. There are users who want to drag their image to Gimp or another application and that only works with a copy action. We will not change that. Maik
Hi Maik, I am using the standard filemanager on ubuntu (18.04 at time of writing). It is the nautilus filemanager. I just double-checked and copy-paste does not work here. Also with Right mouse button context menue the paste option is grayed out. But thanks for the hint. I opened dolphin and by golly, paste works. So it might be a nautilus bug. or even setting.. not sure. Can you check on your side if this behaviour is visible? And regarding the drop action, that makes complete sense. DnD to gimp is a good thing to have.
digiKam 7.0.0 stable release is now published and now available as FlatPak: https://www.digikam.org/news/2020-07-19-7.0.0_release_announcement/ We need a fresh feedback on this file using this version. Thanks in advance Gilles Caulier
Just to answer the request from Gilles, I can drag-drop from Files to Digikam (ubuntu 21.10 default version) But I can not drag-drop from Digikam to Files. Regards, Bert
@bert The drag and drop support have been improved with 8.0.0 release. Can you check if this file still valid ? Gilles Caulier
Hello Gilles, I checked on both my laptop and desktop. On both Drag & drop from Digikam to the desktop or to the filemanager does not work. On my laptop it even freezes the whole system. I have to reboot!! I also noticed both on the laptop and desktop that D&D between folders in Digikam itself doesn't work anymore for me. I get a tiny no-access sign when I drag a photo to a folder and the folder tree when I hover with my mouse over a folder. Strangely, copy-paste into one of the folders does work, so it is not a write-access issue.
>On my laptop it even freezes the whole system. I have to reboot!! It freezes ??? Seriously, i never seen that... What's your laptop OS exactly ? Gilles Caulier
Yes, It is quite extreme and I never seen it before as well. But it was reproducable 3 times. ( two times to the desktop, once to the file manager. I just upgraded to Ubuntu 23.04 on both the laptop and desktop. It is probably something on my side though. I initially had problems starting Digikam at all, so I had to remove the ~/.config/digikamrc and ~/.config/digikam_systemrc before it even started up. Before that, digikam hung at the splash screen with "initiallizing tools" or "loading tools" (not sure about the exact text anymore) Apparently something is off on my system:-( I'll investigate furhter I am mostly puzzled however by the d&d problem within Digikam. This happens on both systems and really hampers my normal use of digikam. Do you recognize this problem? Or is that also only on my side? Regards, Bert
Hi Gilles, I can already report more. I recalled I had enabled Wayland a long time ago(not even sure anymore what application demanded it..) So: With Wayland-> Complete freeze on D&D. Need to reboot via Ctrl-Alt-1. With X11 -> D&D works. But the thumbnail of the moved file is not removed from the view in Digikam, so it looks like a copy. Only when you click the thumbnail, it gives an error. So it is a move action after all. The thumbail disapears after I restart Digikam. The problem with D&D within Digikam remains also under X11. Hope this helps.
Q: did you use the AppImage bundle that we provide or a native package ? Typically, the AppImage do not support yet Wayland, we have another file in bugzilla about this topic. I will work on this ASAP. Gilles Caulier
