Description Rainer Finke 2018-09-25 16:39:56 UTC
Okular opens documents always in the fit to "page width" view, which makes sense for a lot of use cases like notebooks. On a PC monitor with a high resolution (4K) it would be nice to have the option to change this default to the "full page" view, reading a document with the zoom to page width is inconvenient as soon as you can see a DIN A4 page on a PC monitor.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open PDF in Okular
2. Change to "full page" view
3. Close Okular
4. Open other PDF in Okular

OBSERVED RESULT
Okular opens the next PDF again in the "page width" view.

EXPECTED RESULT
Okular opens the next PDF now in the "full page" view or there is a setting to define the default.

SOFTWARE VERSIONS
(available in About System)

KDE Frameworks Version: 5.50
Qt Version: 5.11.2

Okular does remember the preferred view per document; for example if I open a document, switch to "Fit Page" view, close it, and re-open it, it opens in "Fit Page" view again.

What you're asking for is the ability to choose the default view mode for newly-opened documents, right?
Comment 2 Rainer Finke 2018-09-25 20:03:39 UTC
Yes, I'm asking for a possibility to change the today's default for opening new documents. An option in the settings would be nice or remembering my last choice. Recently I had to open many PDF's in a row and then I thought it would be nice if Okular could remember my choice, I always had to adjust it again and again to show the complete page. My workflow is in general like this, open a document and scroll through the fully visible pages until I really start reading details and then I may zoom in only if the font is too small.

By answering you I noticed that a possible workaround would be to not use a maximized window, but at least on Plasma Wayland a new Okular window always opens a maximized window automatically and it doesn't remember if it was closed as a non-maximized window, I may open another bug report for this if you have no concerns.

Thank you for your fast feedback!

Okular *is* remembering your choice for each individual PDF, but not re-using that choice for newly-opened PDFs. It seems reasonable to add a "default view mode" option.

It is so reasonable that the option already exists.

So very reasonable!

How did I not notice that!? Thanks Albert.
