Created attachment 115152 [details] Kompare screenshot showing identical icons for different actions The ‘folder-open’ icon in Breeze looks identical to the ‘document-open’ icon at small sizes. The leads to a *very* confusing UI if the two icons are used for *different* actions in the same application. I’ll attach a screenshot from compare to illustrate the problem. The left icons are for a ‘Select File’ action and the right icons are for a ‘Select Folder’ action. But they look identical!

In the abstract, it doesn't seem ideal that all the document-open icons use folder iconography. However, I believe this is done for reasons of historical familiarity; "open" icons have been a folder since forever, and I think the desire was to keep that visual cue that at this point has been burned into people's brains for 30 years. Now, maybe it's time to re-examine this and choose an icon that makes more sense for the present than for the pats. Or maybe the document-open icons can stay using folder iconography, but be re-done to maybe show a document popping out of a folder or something, or some other thing (not an icon designer). Or maybe Kompare should choose different icons to work around the issue. Probably needs more VDG discussion.
I would be in favor of using different icons in this case, or adding labels to the buttons. Either way would make it more clear.
Adding labels to the buttons would certainly help, but it would still be rather confusing to have two buttons with different text but the same icon.
I started a merge addressing this, but only for kompare https://invent.kde.org/sdk/kompare/-/merge_requests/1 The only suitable replacement icon I can find was document-new, but I might just be not looking hard enough
