Description Giorgos Kostopoulos. 2018-09-15 13:24:18 UTC
"Track Mouse" effect (at System Settings) is broken.
It worked for me only once, never to work again.

Changing keyboard combination (to something other than default) doesn't help.

At Devuan ASCII x64 KDE.
Comment 1 Kai Uwe Broulik 2018-09-17 08:19:54 UTC
You mean the KWin effect in "Effects", not the "Mouse" settings?
Comment 2 Giorgos Kostopoulos. 2018-09-17 09:31:06 UTC
Yes.
Comment 3 Nate Graham 2018-09-18 19:53:31 UTC
Plasma 5.8, while an LTS version, is quite old at this point. Any chance you can upgrade to a more recent version of Plasma and test again?
Comment 4 Giorgos Kostopoulos. 2018-09-18 20:05:20 UTC
While it's almost impossible to upgrade being on a distro based on Debian stable, I'll try to install another distro with more recent versions and I'll be back.
Comment 5 Giorgos Kostopoulos. 2018-09-20 13:58:16 UTC
OK! I installed PCLOS who (as a rolling distribution) usually has latest versions of software.

Seems to suffer from the same bug.
Comment 6 Christoph Feck 2018-10-03 21:53:35 UTC
Thanks for the update; changing status.
Comment 7 Martin Flöser 2018-10-27 15:59:20 UTC
For me track mouse effect works just fine.

Please provide the output of:
qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin supportInformation

For what is worth I wouldn't trust Devuan to be a distribution providing a workable desktop. Removing a core component of Debian and then thinkin that everything still works is rather naive.
Comment 8 Vlad Zahorodnii 2018-10-27 16:21:37 UTC
@Giorgos Can you reproduce this bug in 5.14?
Comment 9 Giorgos Kostopoulos. 2018-10-27 18:10:40 UTC
@Martin:

https://paste.kde.org/phiof0t0h

BTW,the weak point of Devuan, is that is based on Debian (on a dying distribution).
Since the systemd incident, half the Debian devs abandoned the project and from the remaining ones, most of them are semi-disabled and just waiting to see what the future holds.

Do you believe that a bunch of paid devs, can run a vast distro, like Debian???

Having said that, KDE on Debian is flawed. Many apps couldn't even compile and the binaries from repos, are just static KDE4 ones.
I'm not familiar with other distros (because I was using Debian since its first releases), but KDE5 on Debian, is at early beta stage (to say the best).

BTW, I had the same issue on PCLinux, which never had the systemd "component".

@Vlad:
???
I can reproduce it at Devuan and PCLinux.
Comment 10 Vlad Zahorodnii 2018-10-27 18:18:14 UTC
Can you reproduce this bug with the current version of KDE Plasma (5.14)?
Comment 11 Vlad Zahorodnii 2018-10-27 18:32:35 UTC
Also, did you enable the effect?
Comment 12 Giorgos Kostopoulos. 2018-10-29 19:37:35 UTC
Yes of course!

I already tested it with 5.14 (at PCLinux).
Comment 13 Martin Flöser 2018-10-30 18:41:23 UTC
According to the debug output the track mouse effect is *not* enabled.
Comment 14 Giorgos Kostopoulos. 2018-10-30 22:05:05 UTC
Then you found the source of the problem!
The GUI is garbage.

Ehm..I meant...I bit unresponsive! :-)
Not that it surprise me.

PS. Seems to be that this bug is not related to KWin after all.
Fell free to move it to another section (related to GUI) or delete ti altogether.
Comment 15 Nate Graham 2018-10-30 22:07:31 UTC
Please share a screenshot of what System Settings > Desktop Behavior > Desktop Effects looks like for you (please be sure the screenshot shows the Track Mouse effect in the list) so we can properly evaluate whether it needs any changes.

Screenshot_2.

Default keyboard combination, left untouched.
Comment 18 Nate Graham 2018-10-31 13:38:57 UTC
Looks pretty clear to me. The actual window for the effect itself received a usability overhaul recently (Bug 398124) which makes makes things even more obvious in Plasma 5.14 and later.
Comment 19 Patrick Silva 2018-11-05 19:39:01 UTC
I have ctrl and meta checked as modifiers keys and meta+v as shorcut.
The shortcut works all the time, but ctrl+meta makes the effect to appear for some milliseconds, then it deactivates itself and it's not possible to activate it again.

Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.14.2
Qt Version: 5.12.0 beta3
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.51.0
Kernel Version: 4.18.16-arch1-1-ARCH

It works only when you move the pointer and hold the modifiers.

I did not know that.
I think we can have a short text in the setings window to explain how modifiers work.
Thank you Vlad, your work to improve plasma effects is awesome. \o/

Then this report, I suppose is invalid.

It is actually a documentation bug (that failed to inform us, that the behavior changed, since the previous releases).

Yeah... There is a problem with providing information about what the modifiers do.
